Rules for laying deck boards on a metal frame. How to lay WPC decking boards. Decking frame

__________________________________________________

We suggest using professional builders to install wood-polymer composite decking boards.

It is prohibited to use the product for other purposes, as columns, supports, beams and other load-bearing structures.WPC decking boards are intended for installation as flooring. The installation method is of great importance; incorrect installation can lead to a reduction in the service life of the material or to its damage. Please read the instructions carefully before installation, especially important pay attention to maintaining gaps between boards.

  1. During storage and unloading, make sure that the decking is laid on a flat surface, preferably on cross beams along the entire length of the boards.
  2. Avoid contact of the surface of the decking board with construction debris, etc.
  3. Strictly follow the recommendations for installing wood-polymer composite decking boards, and also use the recommended tools.
  4. If you have no experience in installing a terrace system, use the services of professionals.

Preparation of the terrace surface

Before the beginning installation of WPC decking boards, make sure that the surface is continuous and level (maximum recommended deviation is no more than 5mm). In case of installation on a solid concrete base, to prevent the joist from breaking or bending when drilling, it is advisable to use a metal fastener made of galvanized or stainless steel to prevent rust.

Adaptation, preparation and checking of decking

  1. Before installing the terrace, it is necessary to give the decking board time to adapt to the environment for 1-2 days. Place the decking on the joists. They should be located on a flat surface no more than 40 cm from each other.
  2. Installation must be carried out by at least two people.
  3. Do not install WPC decking boards at temperatures below 0°C.
  4. It is prohibited to use WPC terrace boards as a support or base for balconies, stairs, etc. In such cases, special measures should be taken in accordance with existing standards. WPC decking boards can be laid on existing balconies, stairs, etc.
  5. At the installation site, as with natural wood, it is necessary to ensure sufficient air circulation so that the space under the floor can dry properly. To achieve this, air must circulate at various points on the deck and a sufficient number of ventilation holes must remain open.
  6. Deck boards may have some color differences due to the presence of natural wood particles in the material from which they are made. Such differences are found in the products of all suppliers of WPC decking boards. Slight color differences may occur in different production batches of products. Painting and brushing of product samples is not strictly prescribed. In this regard, it is recommended to use boards only from the same production batch within the same project. The color of the decking changes during the first weeks after installation. This is a natural process caused by a combination of moisture absorption and exposure to ultraviolet rays, which can cause color differences between previously installed boards and those that have not yet been exposed to sunlight. These differences will disappear over time. Due to the above, color differences are expressly not covered by our warranty.

Carefully check each WPC deck board before installation. An installed board that is damaged before installation (and is nevertheless installed) is not covered by the warranty! The guarantee in all cases is limited to the supply of replacement boards.

About expansion gaps (longitudinal seams)

Longitudinal seams when laying WPC terrace boards are necessary to ensure drainage (draining water from the surface of the terrace system), as well as convenient cleaning of the surface. In addition, expansion joints provide slight thermal expansion/contraction of the WPC decking profile during temperature changes in the environment.

When laying terrace decking, there are two installation options: seam and seamless.

Suture- formed during installation of the terrace using a stainless steel clamp or plastic clip. The seam size is 4-5mm.

This installation option is a prerequisite when assembling a terrace outdoors and in places of high humidity. This method ensures the maximum service life of the products.

Seamless- an option for constructing a closed terrace or installing decking in the premises. Fastening is carried out with a stainless steel clamp with a gap between the boards of up to 1-2mm. This method eliminates debris from entering the system, and also makes its appearance more attractive and convenient to use.

The main rules for installing WPC decking boards

  1. CIRCULATION- it is necessary to ensure sufficient air circulation under the decking, and also to prevent direct contact of structural elements with the ground or grass covering
  2. THERMAL EXPANSIONS- it is imperative to take into account the expansion along the length and width of all structural elements due to changes in temperature and humidity during operation
  3. DRAINAGE- when installing the terrace, maintain a slope of the decking surface of 1-3% for better drainage.
  4. INSTALLATION- installation is carried out at an air temperature not lower than 0ºС.

INSTALLATION OF WPC TERRACE BOARDS

Installation of mounting joists made of WPC

WPC installation logs should not be too long, the recommended length is 3 meters. The step between the central axes of the rows of joists should be 33cm, maximum 35-40cm. The logs should be installed with a small gap at the ends. The gap between the ends of the support beams should be 20mm.

  1. The joists should not be considered as a supporting structure, they themselves should rest on something along their entire length, with the exception of cases where the deck is mounted on pedestals (supports). Between the pedestals it is necessary to maintain a distance of no more than 40 cm (center-to-center). The logs must not be embedded in concrete, glued or otherwise attached to each other.
  2. The logs must not be in the water.
  3. The logs are laid with the grooved side down and the groove up. The groove allows you to install the screw with the clip exactly in the center of the mounting joist.
  4. The logs are laid at a distance of at least 10 mm in length and width from any fixed structure. There must be a gap of at least 20 mm between the lags.
  5. Condensation and water flow along the deck boards, i.e. perpendicular to the joists. Therefore, gaps should be left between the cross joists to ensure good drainage.
  6. Rigid fastening of the joists to the base is not allowed. To press the logs, it is necessary to use brackets made of stainless steel or aluminum, at intervals of about 1 m.
  7. The ends of each board should rest on the joists. Secure the ends to avoid any possible deformation under the board's own weight, and to avoid the risk of the board breaking when loaded on the lip. When laying boards longitudinally, both edges should rest on separate parallel logs.
  8. If the logs cannot be attached to the base (for example, on the roof), they can be laid and fixed on pedestals (supports) located at a distance of no more than 40 cm from each other (center-to-center). In this case, aluminum joists should be used instead of conventional wood composite joists. Make a frame (frame) from aluminum joists (placed perpendicular to each other) to prevent the boards from sagging towards the center.

Expansion gap

Be sure to leave room in advance for the linear expansion of the boards. In places where the decking is installed next to a wall, the gap between the edge of the decking surface and the wall should be from 20 to 30mm. Taking into account the thermal expansion or contraction properties of the main decking profiles made of WPC, the recommended length for the main decking profiles is 3m.

Fastening the board with a clamp. Assembly of the terrace.

Before screwing the screw into the mounting joist, it is necessary to make a hole of a smaller diameter with a drill, no more than ¾ of the diameter of the screw.

To fix the board more tightly and evenly, use a mallet. Tap the side closest to you to create an even gap along the entire length of the main profile.

Where the ends of the main profile meet, use double rows of support joists so that each end of the board rests on its own support joist. The width of the gap between the rows of support profiles should be from 3 to 5 mm.

When laying the last row of the board, where the edge cannot be fixed with a clip, it is allowed to screw in a self-tapping screw/drive a nail into the side of the main profile of the board - at a distance of 2-3mm from the edge.

If the length of the main profile extends beyond the last row of support joists, then the length of the part of the decking protruding above the joist should be less than 2 cm. Otherwise, deformations, breaks or other defects associated with the weight load falling on such places are inevitable.

The final stage of installing the terrace is edging the terrace with a wood grain corner or an end strip around the perimeter. The corner or strip is fastened with a self-tapping screw.

Installing trim corner or end strip

The corner and end strip are used to finish the perimeter of the terrace. They improve the appearance of the terrace flooring, hiding the appearance of the structural elements. Unlike the corner of the wood panel, the end strip does not have a protrusion on the surface of the terrace.

  1. Make sure that the joists at the edge of the deck are at least 5mm longer than the boards.
  2. Saw off a corner or end strip to size and place it along the edge of the flooring, maintaining a distance of at least 5 mm between the board and the plinth.
  3. Screw them tightly to the joists using long stainless steel screws.

OPERATION AND CARE OF WPC TERRACE BOARDS

  1. For regular maintenance, use a brush or a high-pressure cleaner (max. 80 bar). When cleaning, clean the boards in the direction they are laid. Do not use an industrial high-pressure dirt cleaner, and to avoid damaging the boards, do not bring the water jet too close. If necessary, you can use a mild detergent. The use of solvents, stain removers, paints and polishes is prohibited under any circumstances.
  2. To avoid the appearance of moss, make sure that the gaps between the boards are clean and water drains well. You can also prevent the appearance of moss by cleaning your decking regularly.
  3. It is recommended to regularly rearrange flower pots and other items to prevent uneven aging of the decking.
  4. Grease and oil stains are best and fastest removed using a household degreaser. Do not allow stains to dry or penetrate into the panel material. If the stain is dry, remove it thoroughly with a high-pressure cleaner and sand in the direction of the grooves. After some time, the discolored area should even out in color.
  5. Scratches can be removed using a wire brush. First, wet the boards as much as possible to prevent discoloration. Gently walk along the entire length of the board to remove any scratches. The resulting slight discoloration will fade over time.
  6. In shaded or partially covered areas, damp spots may appear, which will disappear over time when exposed to ultraviolet radiation or bad weather conditions. This will not affect the actual quality characteristics of the board, so any complaints or claims in this regard will not be considered. This effect will disappear over time, but it cannot be completely avoided. You can speed up its disappearance by brushing.

NOTE

  1. In the case of using WPC decking boards for gazebos, terraces, etc. It is not recommended to use wooden joists, since the thermal expansion of logs made of natural wood differs from the characteristics of materials made of WPC, which can lead to a violation of the geometry or integrity of the terrace flooring.
  2. At the junction of the ends of the terrace boards it is necessary to lay two parallel support logs. That is, the edge of each board rests on its own lag.
  3. During installation, We recommend installing each next row of boards in a “running start” with the joints offset by at least 1/3 of the length of the board.
  4. If during installation you used wedges between the boards and walls, then don't forget to delete them.
  5. End of the board must lie on the log and attached to it with a clip or clamp.
  6. It is not recommended to attach the corner to the edge of the step, since it performs more of a decorative function. We recommend installing an aluminum corner on the edge of the step.
  7. To avoid coals getting onto the decking board (for example, from a barbecue), place a metal sheet under the grill itself.

PRINCIPLE OF INSTALLING WPC TERRACE BOARDS ON A PLASTIC CLIP

HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT INSTALLING WPC DECKING?

- CALL.

Terrace board (decking) made of wood-polymer composite is a beautiful and durable flooring for terraces, gazebos, porches, pool areas, walkways. personal plot. It is unpretentious in care and operation. The service life of a decking board can reach half a century or more. But for this it is important to follow all the rules and nuances of installation.

Basic rules for laying decking boards

  • The surface on which the decking is laid must be level, hard and durable (for example, screed, beams, concrete slabs).
  • Do not: lay logs directly into the ground. And, of course, they should not be constantly in the water.
  • Drainage or drainage must be provided under the decking.
  • The flooring must have a slope in the direction of drainage of at least 1%, that is, 1 cm per linear meter.
  • Free air circulation must be ensured under the flooring to remove moisture. This will help prevent mold and mildew from forming.
  • The screws used for decking installation must be resistant to corrosion.
  • At the end of installation, the coating must be thoroughly rinsed twice with high pressure water.

Tools and materials that will be required for laying decking boards:

  • terrace board;
  • support beams;
  • initial and intermediate staples (clasps);
  • screws;
  • end strips;
  • plugs;
  • corners;
  • level;
  • saw;
  • tape measure and pencil;
  • screwdriver;
  • drill.

How to lay deck boards?

It is better to lay decking boards in dry weather, when the air temperature is above zero. It is advisable to first unpack the boards themselves and let them lie in the air for a day or two in the place where they will be laid.

Each board must be secured to special supports - logs. This can be done in one of two ways:

  • perpendicular (boards are laid perpendicular to the joists);
  • diagonally (boards are installed diagonally to the joists).

The process itself is simple, but has a number of nuances that need to be taken into account. Let's look at each stage of installation in detail.

Stage 1. Preparing the base for installation

The following can be used as a base for laying decking boards:

  • solid, level concrete screed with a pre-laid rubber cushion;
  • concrete slabs or support beams;
  • adjustable screw supports;
  • metal or wooden frame with a profile section of 100x100 mm and a distance between frame profiles of no more than 500 mm (if the logs are made of WPC).

Stage 2. Laying lags

The logs are installed at a distance of no more than 400 mm from each other. When laying diagonally, the distance should be reduced to 300-350 mm.

It is important to maintain a compensation gap between the joists and the wall or any other obstacles - at least 10 mm. Otherwise, the boards may become deformed due to thermal expansion.

The logs must be aligned with each other and be in the same horizontal plane.

Stage 3. Installation of decking boards

Laying the board itself is done as follows.

  • Using self-tapping screws, the clamps are attached to the joists. Moreover, the first clamp is screwed onto the edge of the joist.
  • The decking board is laid in such a way that it fits into the clamp.
  • The second clamp is installed on the opposite side. The installed board is secured.
  • In the same way, clamps are installed on all joists.

Advice: Clasps must be installed on all joists. Otherwise, the decking board may sag.

  • The remaining boards are installed in the same way.

Advice: The clamps must fit into the grooves of the decking board. This ensures a strong fastening, as well as the necessary gap between the boards.

  • After installing all the boards, their ends are leveled and hidden with decorative caps.
  • After completing the work, you need to thoroughly wash the surface of the decking board with running water.

Technology for laying decking boards: typical mistakes

In most cases, problems with decking that arise during operation are associated with errors made during its installation. Here are some of them.

  • The distances between the logs are not maintained.
  • The fasteners are overtightened.
  • There is no or improperly arranged water drainage.
  • The boards were laid without compensating gaps.
  • Drainage is incorrect or lacking.

If you have not figured out how to properly lay a WPC deck board, or are not sure that you can handle this work yourself, order professional installation of the coating by specialized installation teams. Thus, certified Alta-Profile specialists have been trained by our experts and will perform all work in compliance with technological standards and manufacturer’s recommendations. Quality is guaranteed by Alta-Profile.

Operation of decking boards

The lifespan of decking primarily depends on the quality of installation. And secondly, it depends on how it is used.

In conclusion, here are some tips that will help extend the life of the decking board to 50 years or more.

  • Do not allow the terrace to be flooded for more than 4 days.
  • Do not use metal sponges, scrapers or spatulas for cleaning. It's better to use a regular cotton or microfiber cloth.
  • Remove any defects (for example, a cigarette mark) using sandpaper.
  • For washing, use running water or non-abrasive, non-acid detergents.

And a stylish and solid coating will decorate your terrace, walkway, or porch for many decades!

For those who don’t know or have forgotten, let me remind you that a terrace board is construction material for the installation of floors in rooms and structures that have contact with precipitation, open air, water and other active influences. The name itself implies the purpose of this board - the installation of floors on open and semi-open verandas, terraces, open podiums, swimming pool areas, even piers and moorings.

Why deck boards are not afraid of moisture

The second, technological name for a decking board is a board made of wood-polymer composite. Composite means a man-made material made up of several components. The composition of WPC boards includes: wood flour (40-45%), polyethylene or PVC (40-45%), dyes and additives. It is the polymer components of the WPC board that make it impervious to moisture, rot, fungi and ultraviolet radiation.

Installation of decking boards

Let's look at the design of the decking board, in the photo or in more detail. The edges of the decking board have technological grooves that serve to attach it to the base. The WPC boards are fastened with special brackets, which are simultaneously attached to the base and cling to the groove of the board.

Installation of terrace boards is carried out on logs. The joists in this floor structure should also be made of composite polymer or aluminum. You can install a terrace board in two ways and using two different technologies.

  1. The first installation method involves laying the boards continuously without seams. A hidden technique of fastening with brackets to the grooves at the end of the board is used;
  2. The second installation method involves leaving uniform gaps between the boards to drain water or sediment. With this installation, the board is fastened openly with screws through the front part of the board/

According to the installation technique, use:

  • Technology of laying floors on adjustable joists. Installation of logs is carried out on adjustable supports, often made of plastic. The boards themselves are fastened across the joists using fastening brackets or self-tapping screws.

class="eliadunit">

  • Technology of laying floors on joists of a solid foundation. In rooms not accessible to precipitation, as well as in semi-enclosed rooms (veranda, terrace), it is possible to install the decking on a solid base (for example, a concrete slab) without adjustable supports. This installation complicates drainage and therefore limits the impact of water.

Both technologies require floor ventilation and drainage for outdoor floors. For ventilation, ventilation holes at the ends of the structure, as well as gaps between the adjacent walls (10-12 mm) and the first floor boards, are sufficient. For open areas, it is necessary to arrange water drainage by making a base slope from under the structure.

Installation stages

The basis for installing decking boards can be: a concrete base, a metal frame, open soil with a compacted backfill of sand and fine gravel.

  • Rows of adjustable supports are installed on the base at equal distances (30-40 cm). The pitch between supports is 1000 mm;
  • Logs are attached to the supports. The method of fastening depends on the design of the support;
  • Using the rotating mechanisms of the supports, the log levels are set at a single horizontal level in all directions of the surface;
  • Starting from the wall of the room, the first row of boards is laid with a gap of 10-12 mm. The board is fastened to the joists with brackets;
  • The end joints of the boards should fall in the middle of the joist. It is better to install additional support under the end joint;
  • After laying the surface, the edges of the structure are covered with corners made of WPC composite, leaving holes for ventilation.

Before attaching the decking board, you must remember that this material, well known as “garden parquet,” has not only a number of undeniable advantages, but also some disadvantages that must be taken into account during the installation process.

Decking, or decking board, belongs to the category of relatively new finishing materials with high quality characteristics, which makes it relevant for use in conditions of frequent precipitation, significant temperature changes and under the influence of direct rays of sunlight. This type of finish is also in demand in places with very high traffic rates.

Scope of application

Most often used as flooring on open terraces of personal plots and areas adjacent to cottages. Terrace decking is widely used when arranging flooring on roofs, open balconies or loggias, and verandas. Recently, the material has been increasingly used in the design of garden paths and areas around outdoor swimming pools.

Decking has proven itself to be a convenient and safe covering for a playground, pier or pier, and can also be used to create patios for restaurants or cafes. Somewhat less commonly, terrace boards are used as cladding for the façade of buildings.

Advantages and disadvantages

A high-quality decking board, in addition to being highly environmentally friendly, has the following advantages:

  • long service life exceeding thirty years;
  • anti-slip surface;
  • no need to perform protection using chemicals, as well as painting or varnishing;
  • wide selection of decorative qualities;
  • pleasant but unobtrusive aroma of natural wood;
  • pleasant tactile properties;
  • high level temperature resistance ranging from minus 60°C to plus 80°C;
  • immunity to the negative effects of bacterial flora;
  • ease of processing, including cutting and drilling;
  • simplicity and accessibility of independent installation and dismantling.

The standard sizes and main characteristics of decking produced by domestic and foreign manufacturers are as follows:

  • thickness 2.2-2.8 cm;
  • width 13.5-14.7 cm;
  • length 1.5-6.0 m.

The disadvantage of this material can be considered its rather high cost, as well as its susceptibility to patination, which consists in the formation of a silvery shell-film on the surface. The coating produced with the addition of plastics is completely devoid of the external and tactile qualities of natural material.

Popular types

Depending on the purpose of application and quality characteristics, as well as the features of the manufacturing technology of the finishing material, decking boards can be presented in several types:

Planken or beveled board is facing material, designed for finishing both outside and inside the premises. This type of decking board is perfect for partial or complete cladding of residential premises, gazebos and fences. Straight plank often has grooves that make it easier installation work. Beveled planks have rounded or beveled sides, allowing for overlapping installations and good coverage of gaps.

Production Features

Recently, the growth trend in the volume of individual development has clearly emerged and become very stable. This situation has allowed both domestic and foreign manufacturers to quickly respond to basic consumer requests, replenishing the market with new and promising, high-quality materials.

In the manufacture of such finishing and building materials, exclusively strong wood is used. Foreign manufacturers take tropical wood as the basis for their products, while domestic materials are most often made from conifers, oak or ash. Production is based on mandatory processing under high-temperature conditions, including hot steam.

Technology based on sawdust makes it possible to obtain an aesthetic building and finishing material with fairly high strength and uniformity. In this case, wood processing waste is supplemented with special polymer additives, as a result of which it is possible to obtain a WPC material, which is called deck or composite decking. A special feature of such decking boards is their very high reliability and the absence of any deformation changes under the influence of negative external factors.

Selection rules

Natural wood has a number of disadvantages, the most important of which is the need to constantly impregnate the material with an antiseptic and cover it with decorative and protective compounds.

It is quite problematic to carry out such activities from the inside, therefore, as a alternative option wood-polymer composites were developed. In such decking, the proportion of wood can vary between 38-68%, and about 4% is made up of coloring pigments. The rest of the finishing material is substituted with polymers.

Polymer decking boards are presented on the construction market in a wide selection and a rich range of colors. When choosing, it is recommended to pay attention to well-known brands that receive positive reviews:

  • Terranson is one of the large and popular manufacturers producing composite finishing boards using environmentally friendly and high-quality raw materials;

  • composite Decoration Materials from the Belgian company Bruggan have proven themselves to be a reliable and durable material;

  • the Rehau company has been producing decking boards for just under ten years and occupies a leading position in the production of garden parquet;

  • OLYMPIYA decking board has a special profile, therefore it is used when installing on objects with a high level of traffic and high impact loads;

  • in works related to the finishing of a pier, bridge, pier, terrace, garden path, as well as the roofing system in use, Darvolex decking boards have proven themselves best;

  • the Hungarian company Legro also produces decking boards that are free from such shortcomings as rotting and delamination. This high-quality material has the advantage of good resistance to any type of mechanical damage, as well as the negative effects of rain and sun.

It is important to remember that the decking used to finish the flooring in the sauna and the area around the pool must have a corrugated profile. This guarantees a reliable anti-slip effect.

Self-installation technology

Modern decking boards are a unique material in their characteristics, but they need to be properly used when carrying out finishing work. Only correctly performed independent installation will ensure that the surface retains absolutely all the unique performance qualities declared by the manufacturer over a long period. Before assembling a structure based on a terrace board, it is recommended to allow the material to acclimatize well under the conditions of intended use for a couple of days.

Basic set of materials and tools

Regardless of the installation option and type of decking board, you will need to prepare a starting set of material and working tools in advance:

  • support beams;
  • initial and intermediate staples;
  • galvanized screws and self-tapping screws;
  • standard plugs;
  • end finishing materials;
  • galvanized or stainless steel corners;
  • electric drill and standard set of drills;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • measuring construction tape and meter level;
  • pencil or construction marker;
  • hand saw.

The basic set can be supplemented depending on how the finishing material is intended to be installed and fastened.

Correct calculations

There are two ways to lay deck boards. When installed openly, the board is fixed on the joists from the front side using anti-corrosion galvanized screws. The closed installation option will require fixing the boards on the joists using clips on the inside.

Flooring length in accordance with the direction of the decking boardBoard lengthRecommended installation clearance

From 600 cm to 10 m400-600 cm0.5 cm
More than 10 mLess than 400 cm0.6 cm
More than 10 m400-600 cm0.9 cm

The gap between the installed decking and the wall must be 0.8 cm or more. When joining elements along the length, the standard space left between the end parts should be as follows:

  • with a flooring length of 400 cm – absent;
  • with a flooring length of 400-600 cm - 0.3 cm;
  • with a flooring length of more than 600 cm - 0.45 cm.

To perform longitudinal adjustment of terrace boards to each other, it is necessary to leave a gap of 0.2 cm. For self-installation, several types of deck board fixation can be used, represented by “classic”, “twin-mini”, “nail-pro” and twin-version . Appearance Such a fastener is represented by a metal plate coated with special anti-corrosion compounds. For fixation square meter finishing will require about two dozen fasteners. Mounting into a clip, which is located on the joists, is also often used.

Preliminary surface preparation

The most important condition correct installation decking is considered to be the competent arrangement of the most reliable base foundation, which can be represented by the following types:

  • cement screed treated with bituminous compounds;
  • wooden logs treated with antiseptics and painted;
  • metal beams resistant to corrosion.

It is mandatory to treat the base from any weeds and use any high-quality material that prevents the germination of weeds.

Step 1. The soil surface is leveled and its high-quality compaction is carried out using vibratory ramming.

Step 2. Backfill onto a leveled and compacted surface with a crushed stone or gravel layer 10-12 cm thick. A five-centimeter layer of sand is poured on top of such a backfill.

Step 3. Installation of reinforcing mesh on top of the sand and gravel cushion. The foundation can be represented by continuous concreting or concrete slabs under the logs.

Step 4. Ensuring the immobility of the base with the help of special adjustable supports, for fastening of which reliable and high-quality dowels are used.

Step 5. You need to place logs on the adjustable supports perpendicular to the direction of the decking board. Such elements are laid strictly parallel to each other, with a distance of 400-700 mm. The supports are secured with galvanized screws and dowels. Straight and oblique corners are used to connect each other.

Joist fastening, diagram

Before installing WPC decking, you need to develop a drainage system that will protect the soil from swelling during a thaw. The base should be made with a slight slope towards the drainage system. The standard slope is 10 mm per meter of surface.

Installation on concrete base

One of the mandatory rules for installing decking boards on a concrete base is to ensure high-quality waterproofing with waterproofing. Installation of boards should begin from the walls, retreating at least 0.8 cm.

Step 1. Install the first board with a tenon joint towards the wall and fix it using fasteners. The recommended mounting distance is 30-35 cm.

Step 2. The side of the board that is closer to the wall must be pressed against the concrete base using a plinth. It is considered optimal to use good quality plastic skirting boards.

Step 3. Installation of the next flooring element, which must be driven with a tenon into the groove of the previous board, maintaining a distance of 0.2 cm. The installed element is secured with dowel nails.

Step 4. Install the following decking boards in the same way. Joining along the length of the finishing flooring from boards less than 400 cm long is carried out by fitting the elements closely. When fitting longer boards, the elements must be joined with a gap of 0.45 cm. The joint areas of different boards should not coincide. The minimum distance between the joining zones is 20-25 cm.

The edges of the decking can be secured using aluminum corners 30x30 mm. The open edge with the “spike” is secured with a screw, the head of which is masked by a chamfer. The edge part is closed with an aluminum corner.

Installation on a wooden base

If there is a base for the flooring, represented by a wooden sheathing or a solid flooring, it is advisable to use galvanized screws to fix the decking board. If a non-solid option is used wooden base, then it must be treated with antiseptics and painted. Installation of flooring based on terrace boards is carried out at standard intervals of 10-15 cm. The technology for installing elements is the same as when installing flooring on a concrete base.

Features of open and closed installation

Open installation of decking boards or decking is used most often. This technology resembles the installation of a standard floorboard, but galvanized fasteners are used for fixation, the holes for which must be drilled in advance.

Closed installation is in demand when it is necessary to obtain durable and decorative flooring with absolutely invisible fastenings. This installation option is considered to be the most complex, and a feature of the technology is the preliminary installation of hidden square-shaped stainless steel fastening brackets on the joists.

Step 1. Make grooves on the side of the installed decking boards. The standard groove depth should be approximately 2.5 cm.

Step 2. Place special plates in the grooves that are made to ensure fixation of the finishing material.

Step 3. Joining deck boards using plates. This method of joining allows you to get a completely smooth and beautiful flooring.

The last board is fastened through with self-tapping screws, the pitch is 40 cm

The hidden installation method is more labor-intensive and, as a rule, is not used when doing flooring yourself.

Finishing the facade with terrace boards

Step 1. Installation of insulation. Fixation is carried out using glue and dowels with a metal rod.

Step 2. Installation of sheathing made of dried wooden beams 50x50 mm. Double strips are installed in the corners. Similar double strips are attached in the places where the ends of the cladding panels will be located. Fixation is carried out with dowel nails through pre-drilled holes.

Step 3. Installation of starting aluminum profile. Through the holes, the profile is attached to the sheathing posts using self-tapping screws.

Step 4. Installation of corner profiles. All self-tapping screw heads must be recessed.

Step 5. Installation of the first panel. The connection is made using a tongue-and-groove system. Each strip is fixed with a special clip.

To build your own terrace you need to have some knowledge. Most often, such structures are made from composite decking boards or ordinary larch. These are excellent materials that have many advantages. But for those who want to cover a terrace with decking, it is important to know how to do it. From this article you will learn how to lay larch or WPC decking boards.

You will be provided detailed instructions, a list of what you need and a detailed video. Thanks to this, you can do everything yourself.

What you need to lay larch decking boards

According to the instructions, before installation, the boards themselves should be installed in the place where the work will be carried out. This is necessary so that the material undergoes adaptation and acquires that temperature and humidity. The rules state that work should not be done in winter. And to extend the life of the material, you need to ventilate the boards and make a slope so that moisture drains from them.

Here's what you'll need to lay your decking:

  • logs that will serve as supports and frame;
  • intermediate and initial bracket;
  • self-tapping screws to fix products;
  • end strips;
  • plugs if the planks are hollow;
  • corners;
  • directly the decking itself for installation.

Advice! If you decide to install WPC decking boards, then this video will help you decide on the choice of material.

As for tools for work, stock up on:

  1. Saw.
  2. With a mallet.
  3. Drill.
  4. Construction level.
  5. Pencil and tape measure.
  6. Screwdriver and drills.

When everything you need is prepared, you can begin the installation process.

Step No. 1 - prepare the base

If you want to use decking and lay boards on a base that is not prepared, then such an idea will not be successful. The base must be strong, level and smooth. As such a base, you can make a concrete screed, build columnar foundation, install metal logs. If the place where the future terrace will be is lined with grass, then you need to get rid of it.

Preparation of the base also includes creating drainage to remove moisture. To do this, the base must have a slope of 2 °. Then the water will drain from the terrace. And to speed up the movement of water, install the decking board parallel to the descent.

Step No. 2 - install logs

Once your base is leveled and prepared, you can begin installing the decking joists. Aluminum logs are more durable and stronger than wooden ones. But a wooden product is cheaper. Therefore, the choice is yours.

Support logs are installed on a concrete base and fixed to it anchor bolts. The maximum lag pitch is 40 cm. But those places that will be subject to special loads need to be strengthened, so reduce the distance between the lags by half (20 or 25 cm).

Note! Maintain clearance near walls, thresholds, curbs or other obstacles. It is equal to 20 mm. This is enough so that the boards can expand under the influence of temperatures in the summer.

All work should be checked with a level and tape measure. Each joist must be in its place, stand level and secure. Even if the concrete screed is perfectly level, do not neglect measurements. The final result depends on how correctly you install the deck board joists. The coating should not move or creak underfoot.

Step No. 3 - install the decking board

When the logs are securely fastened, you can begin installing the decking board. Further work quite simple. Everything is done according to the principle of fastening the lining. Here are the detailed instructions:

Work until the deck is finished.

Note! This is an open method of fastening deck boards. It is the simplest, but to implement it you need to damage the coating of the products. There is another installation method, hidden. Thanks to it, the fasteners will not be visible, and the board will remain intact. The method is suitable for both larch boards and WPC.

Step No. 4 - finishing the job

If you have completely covered your terrace with larch boards, you can bring everything to fruition and correct any shortcomings. After all, the terrace has not yet acquired its completed appearance and attractiveness. First, use end caps to hide any gaps at the ends.

Advice! Most often, hollow boards are used for terraces, rather than solid ones. They are much cheaper, and are ideal for using terraces. This way you can save money without harming yourself.

An alternative option for end caps is an end strip. Thanks to it, you can hide all the imperfections on the edges, as well as sheathe the lower part of your terrace. This will give her a better look. Another method to hide the ends is a polymer corner. It is attached to the board and is also the lining of the lower part. After completing all the work, all that remains is to clean the products by removing dust, shavings and other waste.

Avoid installation mistakes

Laying decking boards made of larch or other material requires strict adherence to instructions and rules. If you do something wrong, the end result may not please you. What to do to avoid mistakes? Here is a list of simple rules that you better remember:

  1. It is imperative to create gaps between each board. Thanks to this little trick, you can extend the service life of larch decking boards for many years. In addition, the gaps will act as ventilation, allowing the wood to breathe and dry. And in the summer heat, when the material expands, the gap will protect it from cracks and damage.
  2. Do not tighten the screws or other fasteners too tightly. There is no need to be overzealous, as the boards can become deformed under such strong pressure.
  3. If you have made a foundation or poured a concrete screed, but forgot about the slight slope, then it is important to ensure water drainage. To do this, make grooves in several places; along them, water will roll into the drainage system or onto the grass.
  4. Be sure to provide drainage holes.

If you do everything right and take proper care of your decking board, it will last you 25 years or more. The coating will need to be washed and cared for. Larch products need protection from time to time. They need to be treated with an antiseptic, fire retardant and other protective compound. Then neither moisture, nor fire, nor other factors will harm the coating.

Let's sum it up

You may have noticed that installing larch decking boards is not entirely difficult. It is only important to pay attention to detail and follow clear instructions. Thanks to this, you can create a beautiful, reliable, stylish, durable, environmentally friendly and durable covering on the terrace. And the work itself will cost you little.
