The emergence of the city of Irkutsk began precisely with the construction of Ostrog on the left bank of the Angara River, not far from the place where the Irkut River flowed into it, in the middle of the 17th century, namely in 1661. A few years later, the prison was rebuilt, as it was small enough to accommodate all the peasants and the military, who settled at that time in Irkutsk. The newly built prison was a fortress about 100 meters long and 100 meters wide. The walls of the Irkutsk prison consisted of the so-called prisons - a dense row of high wooden poles dug into the ground. The front wall of the prison adjoined three towers. Two of them stood at the corners of the wall, the third - in the middle. The middle tower was a roadway - under it were the gates for entering the prison. The middle tower was called the Spasskaya, since the church parish adjoined it, in which the image of Christ (the Savior) was located.

Trade in Irkutsk

Irkutsk is not only one of the oldest cities in Eastern Siberia, but also the so-called trade gates to the East. Since its foundation, Irkutsk has been a key stronghold in trade relations with China, Mongolia and Transbaikalia. The Russian-Chinese trade route passed through the Irkutsk prison. It was trade that predetermined for Irkutsk its further development and growth as a commercial and industrial center of Siberia. Trade relations with China and Mongolia contributed to the development of various sectors of the economy: cattle breeding, fur trade, agriculture, and the leather industry. The proceeds from trade, as a rule, were invested in industry, gold mining, the development of shipping, and construction.

Today, enterprises of heavy industry, metallurgy, the food industry and the machine-building industry operate in Irkutsk. Here one can single out the Irkutsk Aircraft Building Plant, a heavy engineering plant, a plant for reinforced concrete structures.

Circum-Baikal Railway

All Irkutsk residents and residents of Eastern Siberia know the Circum-Baikal Railway - the Trans-Siberian railway line that goes around the southern part of the lake from Port Baikal station to Mysovaya station. Today, the western part of the Circum-Baikal Railway (Circum-Baikal Railway) has been withdrawn from transit traffic on the Angara-Slyudyanka route, only tourist routes run along it. The eastern part of this railway is part of the Trans-Siberian Railway.

The Circum-Baikal Railway is not only a historical monument reflecting the heroic period of the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway. The Circum-Baikal Railway is an integral part of the tourist resources of the Baikal region, a tourist site that attracts both Russian and foreign tourists with its uniqueness. The uniqueness of this section lies in the fact that it is, perhaps, the most expensive section of all Russian railways, the road was built in a hard-to-reach, mountainous area, in connection with which about 40 tunnels were made along the route of the trains, as well as a large number of reinforcing engineering structures.

"Circum-Baikal", as the locals call it, is an architectural and landscape reserve that goes around Lake Baikal along its picturesque shores with untouched natural landscape. Also, the Circum-Bakal Railway is of great tourist value, as it allows you to show the deepest lake in the world at any time of the year. So, for example, such excursions are provided by the Circum-Baikal Express company, which cooperates with the East Siberian Railway. Vostochny Express is a comfortable train running along the Angara-Slyudyanka route, which will pass through the most picturesque places on the shores of Lake Baikal in one day.
